LEADERSHIP: GETTING THAT JOB

Win the promotion, appointment, assignment, opportunity or gig
Don't muff the interview; or, be passed over, the runner-up or failed candidate

What's the secret to being chosen?  Sadly, there's no one answer.  But there are sensible pointers.  The right experience and qualification; presenting well; and, writing a good resumé.  But years of experience (as both an executive and consultant) tell me the acid test is record of consistently delivering results

We all know the excuses: they had someone already marked; the chairman's nephew got it; or, they didn't want someone who might rock the boat.  And, sometimes, it's true.  But, generally achievers win.

So, how do you develop that winning track record?  What's required to deliver results?  Again, there’s no single answer.  Every situation is different.  Is it a start up, a turnaround or what?  Are the people you'll be leading experienced or untried?  How soon are results required?  Is the job doable?

Once you've checked these and similar questions, you then have another.  How suitable am I?  If I were the panel, would I appoint me?  Be honest!  And, don’t waste time on races you can't even hope to win!  And, beware of undoable jobs!

But, if it's doable and you might have a shot, what next?  First, diagnose what’s required.  Put yourself in the shoes of the people you'll be leadingWhat would they say needs doing by the new leader?  What questions about the future are concerning them?  And, what leadership actions would help to answer these?

From my experience, action is the language of leadership.  And, effective actions are those that answer key questions in the minds of people, whom you need to follow you - and who will need to be enthusiastic about the project or enterprise you run.

If you want that job, here's a first step to getting it!
